Fan or air conditioning? Exhale is a hybrid

Inspired by Nikola Tesla’s bladeless turbine and commercialised by Freerise, a company based in Biot, Exhale positions itself as an alternative to the traditional ceiling fan and air handling systems. Among its advantages, it purifies indoor air thanks to its vortex flow, becoming a valuable complement to air-conditioning and heating systems and is both more ecological and economical.

It weighs 11,3kg, is 18cm tall and has a diameter of 86,4cm. These are the characteristics of Exhale, the first bladeless ceiling fan. At the heart of this technologically certified innovation lies air flow diffused around 360° for optimum ventilation of the room. “One is not going to ventilate effectively with an air flow column right underneath the ceiling fan, better to create a cyclonic effect which shuffles the air in the whole room and harmoniously cools it off”, explains Pierre Lacarrière, head of Freerise. The air molecules are propelled outwards by centrifugal forces creating a vortex effect. The bladeless ceiling fan
progressively transforms a stale environment into a cleansed and comfortable place for its occupants.

On direct current

Apart from the revolution of this vortex effect, it is the Exhale motor that is most relevant to review. In 2011, alternating current electric motors represented over 96% of the electric motor fleet worldwide*. Meanwhile the direct current motor displays numerous advantages and remains a well-known and reliable technology. In the Exhale fan case, the choice of the direct current’s motor enables it to maintain 325 rotations per minute, distinctly superior to traditional ceiling fans, generally not exceeding 200 RPM. The electricity bill is also immediately reduced, as direct current motors consume 50 to 80% less electricity than those relying on alternating current.

Direct current motors (exhale’s option) consume 50 to 80% less electricity than those relying on alternating current.

Design and comfort

The Exhale fan benefits from a fastidious look and an exemplary finish. The uncluttered lines as well as the aesthetic have been well conceived in order to hide the assembly joins, screws and nuts. A version with LEDs lights is available, enabling the customer to give a trendier look to his device. “Beyond the design and the fact that it adapts to low ceiling locations, we have here an alternative lying between air-conditioning and traditional ceiling fans”, analyses Pierre Lacarrière, before adding:
“The full ventilation of the room is also purifying the air of bacteria and odours. Moreover, the Exhale fan is very quiet (33dB on speed 1 and 40 at full blast) and frugal with energy (2W on level 1 and 50 at full blast). It can be left on permanently, day and night, all year around without being a problem”. Exhale can be used as a complementary air handler in tandem with other devices, decreasing their work rate and energy cost. The constant mixing improves air quality without having to open a window and eliminates ambient humidity for 24h/24 and all year around functionality.
